Plastic dowels are used in cakes to provide structural support, especially in multi-tiered cakes, by acting as pillars to hold up the weight of upper layers. They prevent the cake from collapsing, ensure stability during transport, and stop the top tiers from sinking into the bottom ones. Dowels are cut to size and inserted into the lower tiers to support a cardboard cake board, on which the next tier is placed.
